Below the surface of the cool, dark blue water off the North Coast leaves only 10 feet of visibility for the different. There is less than an hour of oxygen supply left in the tank and there are 30 different invertebrate species progressive to count. This is one of three core surveys the scientific diving students conduct twice a year.

Chris O’Connor,  a higher- ranking history major, said unlike recreational diving, scientific divers review the depths of the ocean while studying data and variables that effect the environment. “It’s lukewarm to have people actually in the water as opposed to looking at books,” said O’Connor. “It is hands on and reveals statistics about the changing environment.”
